Crochet 101 Single Crochet
Hello friends! I am so excited for this post! This first of many of my "Crochet 101" series. Today I am teaching y'all the first step to learning to crochet, the chain stitch and single crochet. These two stitches will be used in almost every project, and are essentials. I use single crochet a lot for amigurumi, wash cloths and for borders around larger projects. You will get a lot of use out of it too! So, lets get started!
First, Start with a slip knot:
Once you have that down, you are going to start out Chain Stitch. To do so, you grab the working yarn (the yarn attached to the skein) and pull it through the loop on your hook. Its that simple! You continue to do so until you have reached desired length. To practice try 11 chain stitches.
Now, let turn this "snake" into something!
To start a single crochet insert hook into the 2nd stitch from hook (pointed out in pic). You will insert the hook in the middle of each "v". Grab the working yarn with hook (yarn over) and pull through the stitch. You will now have 2 loops on your hook. Grab working yarn with hook (yarn over) and pull through both loops on hook.
YOU DID YOUR FIRST STITCH!!!
Now, repeat 9 more times and work until you have 10 single crochets.

So, there are a few things you can make fast and easy with this stitch. Try making a few washcloths! You will start by chaining 26. You will go on and make 30 rows each having 25 stitches, be sure to count your stitches each row to be sure that your work is even.
Another great starter project is a simple scarf! You will start it the same way, 26 chains. This time you will crochet however many rows you will need to create a scarf long enough to keep you cozy! Just remember, 26 chains=25 single crochets. Be sure to count each row.
Now, guys! Please don't get discouraged. My first project was a single crochet scarf, and it was rough, but it taught me a lot! You need to practice to get to the point that your crochet stitches are even and will take some time, but it will be so worth it!
I am so excited for you guys to know the basics, because now we can go further and make some awesome stuff! So, let me know if you have questions, and post a picture of your first work! See you guys soon!
